Champions
The Potomac Hawks sweep through the TIER II playoffs
going 3-0 beating the NV Knights 12-4 for their second TIER II
championship.,,Dave Beckner struggled in the top half of the first inning
allowing 1 run on three walks and two singles. But with 1 out and the bases
still loaded Dave Beckner got the bottom of the Knights order to pop out weakly
to end the threat.,,In the bottom of the second inning and two quick outs the
Hawks began their rally with three straight singles from Carrico, Ashley, and
Marrin. With the ninth spot now coming up Hawk manager Rick Domingo who was
waiting for the arrival of a Hawk starter now was faced with the decision of who
he was going to pluck of the bench to pinch hit. He decided on Matt Mothander
who promptly stepped in the batters box and hit a hanging curve ball deep to
left field for a grand slam and Hawk 4-1 lead.,,Dave Beckner settled into a
groove scattering 2 hits and 0 runs over the next three innings. The Potomac
Hawks scored 1 run in the bottom of the 4 inning on a sac fly from
Mothander.,,The NV Knights were able to score one run in the top of the fifth
inning to tighten the score 5-2. The Potomac Hawks quickly answered in the
bottom half of the same inning scoring 3 runs on singles by Carrico, Marrin and
a double by Mike Walkowiak to increase their lead to 8-2 after 5 innings. ,,The
NV Knights not giving up scored another run in the top of the sixth inning to
cut into the Hawk lead. Damin Hopkins then led of the bottom of the sixth inning
with a home run deep to right center. The Hawks then tacked on two more runs in
the same inning taking advantage of defensive miscues by the Knights for a
commanding 11-3 lead.,,The Potomac Hawks scored their last run of the day in the
eight inning when pinch hitter Rick Domingo hit an RBI single scoring Floriendo
from third base.,,The NV Knights not going down without a fight put the first
batter on base in the top of the ninth inning, closer Garret Marrin then settled
in striking out the next two Knights for the first two outs. Knight Hernandez then
stole second base to put himself in scoring position and Lin then delivered with
a RBI single to keep the inning alive. Marrin then promptly ended the threat
striking out the final Knight batter for the Hawk victory.,,
