Defensive Battle

The Washington Patriots used three outstanding pitching performances, some timely hitting late in the game, and a spectacular catch to win their first ever official Blue & Gray game.  Making his Pats debut, CF Chad Kurz delivered the first web gem of the season with an improbable diving catch - dead run, full extension, back to home plate - on the warning track in left centerfield for the first out of the 5th inning.  Russell Kessinger, making his first Opening Day start as a Patriot, worked 4 innings giving up only 1 hit while striking out 5.  Matt Atkenson followed with 5 K's and no earned runs allowed in his 3 innings of work and with the score tied at 4 in the top of the 8th, SS Nick Nimerala's two out hit drove home the go-ahead run.  Nate Kerr followed with two innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season.
